Overview
Rodan and Fields is a skincare company started by Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, who both have impressive credentials as physicians and dermatologists. They were two of the doctors who helped start the Proactiv brand of acne products. Since that time, Rodan and Fields have created their own line of cosmeceuticals, which are based on the concept of combining effective OTC formulas with botanicals for natural support. Rodan and Fields currently offer one product for eye treatment, which is called Anti-Age Eye Cream.
Featured Ingredients
Anti-Age Eye Cream contains several different kinds of peptides to help reduce crow’s feet and decrease the appearance of dark circles and puffiness. Peptides consist of chains of protein molecules bound together. Initial studies suggest that delivering peptides into the skin can perform a rejuvenating effect and encourage the production of collagen and elastin, which both are instrumental in keeping the skin youthful, elastic and resilient to damage. One of these peptides, Acetyl Hexapeptide 3, is known for its moderate ability to relax facial muscles and thus counteract the contractions that cause crow’s feet. Its effect has been compared to Botox®, but on a safer if weaker level. The other peptides in this formula are too numerous to list here, but many of them have a similar effect. But since there are more than a dozen peptides in the formula - and more than 40 separate ingredients - we have to wonder if these ingredients are able to be included at a therapeutic amount.
Anti-Age Eye Cream also contains several natural compounds, such as Sea Whip extract and Cucumber extract, which are included to produce a calming effect on the skin and promote healthier circulation so that dark circles and under-eye puffiness can be diminished. While some of these botanicals may have a mild effect, we noticed that Anti-Age Eye Complex does not contain any light diffusing compounds (such as Lipolight) nor proven circulation enhancers like Actiflow. It seems to us that this formula - despite its many ingredients - may not be powerful enough for most eye problems.
Web Site Description
The Rodan and Fields web site is quite comprehensive, because it also contains information about its acne products. A full description and history for both Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields is included, which details their impressive background. While a full ingredient list for all of the products is available, we found the site to be lacking some convincing medical research on the ingredients used in the formulas. This research is important to verify whether the ingredients can actually reduce dark circles, puffiness and crow’s feet as reported. Plus, we would have preferred to see some statistics on the formula’s effect on customers who use it. Survey data is very useful. In addition, while there are customer testimonials featured on the site, there is no free trial offer available.
Positives
- Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields have an impressive background in cosmetology- There is scientific basis for the use of peptides in this formula
Negatives
- No scientific research showing the ingredient’s effects on dark circles is included
- The company does not offer a free trial of its products
- Does not contain Actiflow, Lipolight and other proven eye treatment ingredients
Conclusion
Considering the solid reputations of both Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields, we suspect that the Anti-Age Eye Cream will likely have a positive effect on the eye area. But we would feel more confident recommending this product if additional scientific research on the ingredients was included.
