| Biotherm |
|
Overview
Biotherm was originally started in France by an independent company that began following the discovery that a specific type of fermented bacteria that grows in the mineral-rich waters of that country (called Vitreoscella Ferment) produces a smoothing and balancing effect on human skin. After a moderate degree of success, Biotherm was purchased by cosmetic giant L’Oreal, which now owns and controls the distribution of the Biotherm brand. Biotherm currently offers several formulas to promote treatment of the eye area, but curiously enough does not offer these formulas together in any sort of combination that would help keep costs low for the consumer. Despite this, we decided to review its Biotherm Lift Eye Contour (for crow’s feet and fine lines) and Hydra-Deto2X (for dark circles and puffiness).
Featured Ingredients
Unfortunately, we were unable to complete our review of the Biotherm products at this time, since the company does not disclose what ingredients are included to achieve their specified results. The only information we were able to gather on Hydra-Deto2X is that it includes a proprietary compound called OxyDetox Complex. But Biotherm does not disclose what this ingredient complex contains, nor does it cite any research proving that it in fact encourages the retention of oxygen in the skin or any detoxification effect that could reduce dark circles or puffiness. Likewise, the Lift Eye Contour description only contains claims that it can reduce crow’s feet, without any explanation of how the formula accomplishes this. In fact, other than the company’s patented Vitreoscella Ferment, the team at EyeWrinkleReviews.com is not sure what any Biotherm products contain.
Web Site Description
The Biotherm web site is attractive and fairly easy to navigate. Products are categorized by their primary function, and the descriptions are clear. But this does not make up for the fact that no information is available on the ingredients in any of its eye treatment formulas. In addition, the web site does not post any scientific references on Vitreoscella Ferment or any substantiation for its positive effects on the skin. We wonder why the company would keep this information from the public, but unfortunately this makes it impossible to conduct an independent review of Biotherm.
Positives
- Company has a unique story of its founding
- Offers a patented and proprietary ingredient for the skin (Vitreoscella Ferment)
Negatives
- No information about any ingredients in its products are provided
- Web site does not contain any scientific information about ingredients or effects
- No free trial of products is available
- Biotherm does not offer an eye treatment system; products must be purchased individually
Conclusion
Although we were initially intrigued by Biotherm’s story of origination - and impressed by its association with L’Oreal - we honestly cannot recommend any of its eye treatment formulas at this time, since no information is provided about ingredients or effects.

| Rodan + Fields Anti-Age Eye Cream |
|
Overview
Rodan and Fields is a skincare company started by Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, who both have impressive credentials as physicians and dermatologists. They were two of the doctors who helped start the Proactiv brand of acne products. Since that time, Rodan and Fields have created their own line of cosmeceuticals, which are based on the concept of combining effective OTC formulas with botanicals for natural support. Rodan and Fields currently offer one product for eye treatment, which is called Anti-Age Eye Cream.
Featured Ingredients
Anti-Age Eye Cream contains several different kinds of peptides to help reduce crow’s feet and decrease the appearance of dark circles and puffiness. Peptides consist of chains of protein molecules bound together. Initial studies suggest that delivering peptides into the skin can perform a rejuvenating effect and encourage the production of collagen and elastin, which both are instrumental in keeping the skin youthful, elastic and resilient to damage. One of these peptides, Acetyl Hexapeptide 3, is known for its moderate ability to relax facial muscles and thus counteract the contractions that cause crow’s feet. Its effect has been compared to Botox®, but on a safer if weaker level. The other peptides in this formula are too numerous to list here, but many of them have a similar effect. But since there are more than a dozen peptides in the formula - and more than 40 separate ingredients - we have to wonder if these ingredients are able to be included at a therapeutic amount.
Anti-Age Eye Cream also contains several natural compounds, such as Sea Whip extract and Cucumber extract, which are included to produce a calming effect on the skin and promote healthier circulation so that dark circles and under-eye puffiness can be diminished. While some of these botanicals may have a mild effect, we noticed that Anti-Age Eye Complex does not contain any light diffusing compounds (such as Lipolight) nor proven circulation enhancers like Actiflow. It seems to us that this formula - despite its many ingredients - may not be powerful enough for most eye problems.
Web Site Description
The Rodan and Fields web site is quite comprehensive, because it also contains information about its acne products. A full description and history for both Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields is included, which details their impressive background. While a full ingredient list for all of the products is available, we found the site to be lacking some convincing medical research on the ingredients used in the formulas. This research is important to verify whether the ingredients can actually reduce dark circles, puffiness and crow’s feet as reported. Plus, we would have preferred to see some statistics on the formula’s effect on customers who use it. Survey data is very useful. In addition, while there are customer testimonials featured on the site, there is no free trial offer available.
Positives
- Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields have an impressive background in cosmetology- There is scientific basis for the use of peptides in this formula
Negatives
- No scientific research showing the ingredient’s effects on dark circles is included
- The company does not offer a free trial of its products
- Does not contain Actiflow, Lipolight and other proven eye treatment ingredients
Conclusion
Considering the solid reputations of both Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields, we suspect that the Anti-Age Eye Cream will likely have a positive effect on the eye area. But we would feel more confident recommending this product if additional scientific research on the ingredients was included.

| Dr. Brandt r3p eye |
|
Overview
Dr. Brandt is well-known in the cosmetic industry, especially since the publication of his best-selling book, Age-Less, provided an insider’s look at plastic surgery, resurfacing techniques and other methods used by cosmetologists to help people look younger. Based on his more than 40 years of experience in the field, Dr. Brant offers his own line of cosmeceutical products, many of which follow the discoveries he made while working with cancer and leukemia patients. Dr. Brandt recently released a new treatment for the eye, called r3p eye.
Featured Ingredients
According to the company’s web site, Dr. Brandt’s r3p eye helps to diminish dark circles, under-eye puffiness and crow’s feet thanks to its unique set of clinical ingredients and botanical compounds. The formula contains two types of peptides, which are chained proteins that signal the skin to produce more collagen or relax its muscular contractions, many of which can lead to crow’s feet and other types of wrinkles near the eyes. There is some positive evidence suggesting that peptides do have a beneficial effect on wrinkles, but these effects tend to be supported when these peptides are also combined with other collagen-stimulating compounds (like Glucosamine Complex) or moisturizing ingredients (like Hyaluronic Acid). Unfortunately, Dr. Brandt’s r3p eye contains neither of these ingredients.
The formula apparently reduces dark circles and puffiness due to its unique combination of natural compounds, such as green tea, white tea and grape seed extracts. While these natural nutrients will probably produce a protective effect on skin, we are not aware of any research illustrating their effects on dark circles or puffiness. To enhance the anti-puffiness effect, Dr. Brandt’s r3p eye contains caffeine, which probably will help reduce puffiness. Unfortunately, caffeine can also dry out the skin and undermine any moisturizing effect produced by the formula’s other ingredients.
Web Site Description
The Dr. Brandt web site is quite impressive in terms of its design and approach. It definitely captures the personality of the man behind the company, and overall the site has a fresh and modern approach to skin care. We appreciate the fact that the company includes a full list of ingredients, which is helpful for conducting our reviews. In addition, it is easy to order products through the web site, and there are other useful links, including some of the latest news about the company and other resources to find a skincare professional nearest to you. Unfortunately, one area that we saw lacking was the web site’s general omission of clinical research - both on the individual ingredients or the finished products themselves. Without this kind of data, it is difficult to evaluate the real-world effects and determine whether r3p eye actually performs well compared to similar products.
Positives
- Dr. Brandt has an impressive personal background and medical history- The web site contains a full listing of product ingredients
Negatives
- We may not agree with caffeine as an ingredient for puffiness
- The web site does not contain any customer survey data on the product’s effects
- No free trial of product is available
Conclusion
We continue to applaud Dr. Brandt and his staff for their continued efforts in taking a fresh approach to skin care. We hope that they continue to add more information to their web site, since we have yet to become convinced that the r3p eye formula is the best choice for dark circles, crow’s feet or under-eye puffiness. Hopefully they can put our doubts to rest one day.

| Neostrata |
|
Overview
Neostrata is an international cosmetic company that is known as one of the foremost promoters of products containing Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, which are known for their skin resurfacing abilities, at a fraction of the price of spa treatments. Neostrata has three main brands - Exuviance, Cover Blend and NeoCeuticals - all of which take a slightly different spin on skin rejuvenation. The company also offers treatments for skin conditions such as acne and rosacea, but we were primarily concerned with their eye treatment formulas. Neostrata currently offers two separate formulas for the eyes - Brightening Bionic Eye Cream and Hydrating Lift Eye Complex.
Featured Ingredients
Brightening Bionic Eye Cream is formulated to make the skin around the eye are look younger and more youthful by brightening. The formula contains Pro-Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Cucumber Extract to help reduce dark circles and combines these compounds with polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. While we are aware that Vitamin K and Cucumber can enhance circulation to the eye area and thus improve skin brightness (as well as having a mild effect on puffiness), we are not familiar with any research on Pro-Vitamin A and its brightening effects. Unfortunately, Neostrata does not provide any science to support use of this ingredient.
Hydrating Lift Eye Complex is meant to both hydrate and soothe the skin near the eye area in the hopes that skin will become brighter, diminish puffiness and reduce fine lines. This formula contains many of the same ingredients as the Brightening Bionic Eye Cream (PHA and Provitamin A) but also adds Pro-Vitamins C and E for additional antioxidant protection. Unfortunately, we see nothing truly different than the other formula, therefore the researchers at EyeWrinkleReviews.com have to wonder whether this product will truly add more moisture to the skin nor provide any sort of lift as expected.
Web Site Description
Neostrata’s web site is quite massive in comparison to other companies within this industry. Mainly this is due to the fact that the company markets three separate brands of skin formulas, all of which are listed and described on this one central web site. Thus, it may take some time for the typical visitor to find the information needed. Especially those who are looking for the Neostrata eye treatments, it may take several minutes to find such products. While the descriptions are clear and straight-forward, we did not find the additional research material needed to substantiate the company’s claims that the ingredients in these two formulas could in fact brighten the skin or produce any of specific eye-area rejuvenation. The company does have plenty of customer testimonials and products can be purchased directly from the web site, but no free trial is available.
Positives
- Large company that offers dozens of skin-care products- Plenty of customer testimonials
Negatives
- No research posted supporting these two treatments and their specific effects on the eye
- Neostrata does not offer a free trial of its products
- Both products seem nearly identical, leading to potential confusion over which to choose
- While AHAs can exfoliate skin, they also lead to dryness and irritation in many cases
Conclusion
Even though Neostrata must have a certain degree of success, judging from the sheer number of products that it offers, we simply cannot recommend formulas that contain AHAs, especially since the company does not share any research showing how its formulas will specifically battle aging in the eye area.
